The curse of infertility

I remember a Chinese proverb, “A man must plant a tree, write a book and sire a son.”

For us pronatalists, infertility is the worst thing that can happen to us. I distinctly remember my own experience, newly married, no kids yet at that time… and at one time I felt that not enough blood was being pumped into my brain. I was rushed to the hospital. While lying there waiting for a doctor to attend to me I said to myself, “(swear words) I am going to die without bearing children (more swear words).”

I survived to tell that tale and sired a son, and upon seeing my first child I said, “I gotta have more of these…” And it was seeing my first child that made me snap into a pronatalist. I understood more clearly, I experienced making life first hand.

Of course my wife and I wanted more! With our first born less than 1 year old we were knocking at the OB Gyn’s door asking help for infertility! Infertility is one of the worst experiences in our life. One that solidified my resolve against contraception even more. Better to have a surplus of children rather than experiencing the disgust of having to have futile sexual intercourse.
